Alleged Port Elizabeth gang member handed hefty sentence

An alleged member of the Kakdalers gang was on Friday sentenced by the Port Elizabeth Regional Court to an effective 16 years imprisonment for attempted murder and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as for malicious damage to property.

According to the police, Deswin Kleinbooi (22) was sentenced as follows:

  • attempted murder – 10 years,
  • illegal possession of a firearm - 6 years,
  • illegal possession of ammunition – 2 years, and
  • malicious damage to property – 1 year.

The sentences for illegal possession of ammunition and malicious damage to property will run concurrently.

"On 25 November 2015, at about 13:45, Kleinbooi fired several shots at a 17-year-old teenager in Ibex Road Helenvale. The incident was gang related. No one was injured in the incident," police said.

"On 14 May 2016 Kleinbooi was arrested by the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit in Standford Road near Die Gaat. He remained in custody until the finalisation of his case.

"Kleinbooi is also one of two accused in the murder of businessman, Naeem Desai who was gunned down in May 2016 while sitting in his bread delivery truck in Helenvale. The case is remanded to 13 April 2017."

Mount Road Cluster Commander, Major General Funeka Siganga commented that the sentencing emphasised that thorough investigation and close collaboration with the prosecuting authority is key to ensuring that criminals such as these remain behind bars for a long time.
