A 28-year-old man, accused of killing his 26-year-old wife early on Wednesday morning at Mpuku Location, in Chizela Village, Dutywa, briefly appeared before the Dutywa Magistrate's Court on Friday morning.

"He was not asked to plead. The case was postponed to Friday, 11 August 2017," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

He said that the man was remanded in custody for a formal bail application.

"The accused was identified as Yanga Shenxane," Captain Manatha added.

"The deceased (his wife) was identified as Zanele Nkothobe."

According to the police, Nkothobe suffered multiple upper body injuries.

The motive for the murder is not clear at this point in time.

Eastern Cape SAPS Provincial Commissioner,  Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga, said that this is another shocking and senseless case "where a defenceless woman was murdered".

"It must be emphasized that the safety of women and children is a top priority of for the Eastern Cape police. The non-stop investigation of such cases is in line with our Back to Basics policing approach which requires effective and responsive investigation of crime utilizing all resources at our disposal to ensure that offenders are brought to book to face the consequences of their ruthless deeds,” said Lt Gen Ntshinga.
