An unforgettable time at Addo Elephant Back Safaris and Lodges

Follow in the footsteps of the first inhabitants with an unforgettable safari experience where it took very little persuasion to entice my other half for a remote weekend getaway for two to the Addo Elephant Back Safaris and Lodges.

Located within the Greater Addo area, just a short distance from Nelson Mandela Bay, one can enjoy the private and exclusive suites nestled amongst the African bush.

On arrival, we were greeted by the lodge manager and host, Charmaine, while taking in the beauty of our surroundings. Charmaine offered us beverages, which we could enjoy on the lodge deck while waiting for our bags to be collected.

The Addo Elephant Lodge Accommodations are perfectly designed to discreetly blend in with the surrounding valley bushveld environment.

The private and exclusive suites, some nestled in the Yellowwood forest and others set on the hillside, offering extraordinary views, are housed on elevated wooden decks. Constructed partly of canvas and partly of recycled Brazilian pine, it is luxuriously decorated to evoke Hemingway’s Africa of yesteryear; that has spacious, sophisticated suites in the Heart of the Addo Region.

The lodge has ten unique and spacious units - all with en-suite bathrooms, dressing tables and an energy efficient wood burning fireplace. The units also have their own private viewing deck with a king or twin-bedded option, as well as all having solar-powered hot water geysers. On request, there is also a well-stocked mini bar and a tea and coffee-making facility.

The weekend package included accommodation, all meals, which excluded beverages, a game drive, an elephant bedtime encounter and an elephant safari. Children at the age of 12 or under, pay half price while those aged 3 and below stay for free. Transfers were not included in this rate / package.

All of the staff are exceptionally friendly and attend to all your needs and requirements. The lodge also has its own in-house photographer, Mostaff, who captures all the special and memorable moments at the Elephant Back Safaris, for your own keeping.

It is definitely worthwhile to go on the chartered scenic flights for a bird’s eye view of the coastline, surrounding reserves and wildlife. It is recommended to make use of their air or road transfers to reach the lodge. Ideally, you can combine the flight one way (15 minutes) and the road transfer (one hour drive) the other way. We have already booked our next break away!
