ANC and EFF contesting in Wednesday's ward by-election

Two municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape on Wednesday 6 September 2017.

The by-elections will be contested by five candidates representing three political parties, the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC)

In Eastern Cape:

  • Ward 2in the Raymond Mhlaba – EC129 will be contested by Mzimkhulu  Matayo of the African National Congress (ANC) and Mfundo Elliot Hela of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 52.12% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 87.37% of valid votes.

In the Northern Cape:

  • Ward 1in the Magareng Municipality – NC093 will be contested by Thapelo Ernest Mokola of the ANC; Keolebogile Cecelia Mekhoa of the EFF; and Mosapi Michael Boane of the Forum 4 Service Delivery. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 59.07%and the ANC candidate won the ward with 72.38% of valid votes.
