ANC at Bhisho saddened by death of Education MEC, Mandla Makupula

The African National Congress (ANC) Caucus in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature on Monday expressed its distress at the news of the passing on of Eastern Cape MEC for Education, Mandla Makupula.

Makupula passed away in the early hours of Monday at an East London hospital following a long illness. He was due to turn 57 years old on Tuesday.

"Comrade Rema, as he was affectionately known, firmly established himself within the ranks of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the ANC as one of the finest thought leaders," described ANC Chief Whip in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature, Honourable, Fundile Gade.

"He joined the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature in 1999, and was deployed as Chairperson to numerous Legislature Portfolio Committees including Public Works, Office of the Premier and Education.

"He was then deployed to the MEC for Education position, where he served with the utmost diligence, integrity and humility.

"Having established himself as a teacher, comrade, adviser and friend – our gentle giant was highly committed to making a contribution towards the emancipation of the poor and disadvantaged people of the Eastern Cape."

Makupula will be remembered for his character

Gade said that Makupula’s well-rounded character saw him display his leadership prowess on various platforms such as the Trade Union movement, his tenure as the Provincial Secretary of the SACP, and the immeasurable role that he played as the ANC Regional Chairperson of the present day OR Tambo Region.

"At the time of his death, Comrade Rema was a Central Executive Committee Member of the SACP.

"He leaves us at a crucial period wherein the ANC is well into its renewal drive. His superior leadership mind-set and advanced analytical processing in this regard will be sorely missed," he described.

"The ANC Caucus wishes to extend heartfelt condolences to Comrade Makupula’s family, friends, colleagues and fellow comrades.

"Hamba Kakuhle Mkhonto weSizwe. We raise our fist in your honour. You have displayed unmatched service and dedication to your charge."
