ANC confirms arrested cash-in-transit suspect a staffer at Luthuli House

The African National Congress (ANC) on Wednesday said that it is dismayed by the fact that one of its employees was arrested and appeared in court allegedly for involvement in serious crimes.

"Crime remains a serious cancer in our young democracy, and we must continue to fight it in whatever of its manifestations," said ANC National Spokesperson, Pule Mabe.

"We support the efforts by the law enforcement agencies to investigate, arrest and charge perpetrators to such high priority crimes.

"The ANC on its part is following its internal disciplinary policy for employees, and will ensure that appropriate action is taken."

Johannesburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba, initially claimed that one of the suspects arrested for a recent cash-in-transit heist in Dobsonville, Soweto, was an employee at the ANC's Luthuli House headquarters.

Mashaba said he was among four suspects that were arrested in police raids on July 6 and 7.

Four hijacked vehicles were recovered, two of which were apparently used in the robbery.
