King Williams Town - The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has joined the sporting fraternity and the rest of the country in mourning the sad passing of the seasoned activist and sports administrator, Bhuti Mthunzi Maphitiza, who passed away on Monday after a short illness.

"Mr Mthunzi Mapithiza dedicated his life to sport and in particular, the eradication of racial discrimination in sport and the creation of inclusive, non-racial sport," said ANC Media & Liaison Officer, Judy Mpetsheni.

"As a member of the National Sports Council (NSC) during the unity processes of the early 1990s, he was instrumental in the amalgamation of different sporting entities to create the national federations that we now have in South Africa."

She said that Bhuti Mthunzi Maphitiza will be remembered for his diligence, humility, humour and vibrant engagements.

"A sport administrator par excellence. Our country has indeed lost a stalwart in the sport fraternity. The man was committed to the development of sports in particular judo and boxing."

ANC Eastern Cape says Mthunzi Mapithiza death is a loss to South Africa

Mpetsheni said that the African National Congress lowers its banner to pay tribute to the colossal contribution of this martyr towards a representative sport system in South Africa and society.

"His death robs South Africa of another library and a theatre of sport experience and his role in the transformation agenda in sport and recreation will not go unnoticed; and we hope the leadership of the Judo South Africa will find it in themselves to utilise this moment to reflect dearly on the pace of transformation in judo especially in the Eastern Cape Province," she added.

"We have lost a legend who was dedicated to sport and who has made an immense contribution to South African judo and boxing . We wish to convey our deepest condolences to the Maphitiza family.

"Rest in peace Sensei."
