ANC Eastern Cape sends condolences after five killed by hailstorm in Cala

Cala - The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape on Monday conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the families of people, who lost their lives in a hailstorm at Manzimdaka Village in Cala, in the Sakhisizwe Municipality.

The hailstorm, which occurred on Sunday night, also caused severe damage to houses and infrastructure.

"At least five people are confirmed to have died," said Gift Ngqondi, ANC Eastern Cape Provincial Head of Communications.

"The ANC leadership in the Chris Hani Region would pay a visit to affected families to try and comfort and assist them where possible during this difficult time."

Ngqondi added that the Chris Hani District Municipality has activated its Disaster Management Centre to co-ordinate government efforts to investigate the extent of damage and any need for assistance.

"We appreciate the swiftness with which our government has reacted to this hailstorm stricken area as well as the associated measures put in place to avoid further loss of lives and assist victims," he described.

"During this time of tragedy and heartbreak, our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones and wish speedy recovery to the injured."
