Following it's meeting on Monday, the African National Congress' (ANC) National Working Committee (NWC) said that it endorsed a decision by the party's Eastern Cape Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) to disband the ANC Nelson Mandela Bay Regional Executive Committee (REC) and replace it with a working Regional Task Team (RTT).

On Tuesday, however, some members of the ANC's Nelson Mandela Bay branches gathered outside the party's Florence Matomela offices.

In a statement, the ANC said that its National Dispute Resolution Committee (NDRC) resolved to support the disbanding ot the ANC Nelson Mandela Bay REC.

"The NWC urged the Eastern Cape Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) to established an all inclusive Regional Task Team," said ANC National Spokesperson, Pule Mabe.

"The NWC further noted the implementation of the NEC decision directing Comrade Andile Lungisa to resign as a Member of the Mayoral Committee of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and remain as an ordinary Councillor until his court appeal process is concluded."

Surrounded by controversy, Lungisa became the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's MMC for Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity & Energy after the ousting of former Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Athol Trollip, and the then Democratic Alliance (DA)-led coalition government, at the end of August.

Lungisa is currently out on bail after he was convicted and jailed for assaulting DA Cllr Rano Kayser during a brawl that broke out a Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality council meeting in October 2016.
