ANC snatches wards from DA in by-elections held on Wednesday nationwide

Port Elizabeth - During the by-elections contested on Wednesday in eight provinces excluding the Western Cape, the African National Congress (ANC) won four seats and retained 12 seats, the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained ten seats and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) retained one seat gained in the 2016 Municipal Elections.

The sixteen (16) new ANC councillors are:

  • Mzobanzi Nkwentsha in Ward 12 in the Makana Municipality – EC104.The party won the seat from the DA who won the seat in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 54.07% compared to 68.12% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 10.45%.
  • Goodman Tandikaya Ntshonga in Ward 21 in the Mnquma Municipality – EC122.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 90.33% of the votes cast compared to 79.55% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 33.33%.
  • Nyaniso John Tshokotshela in Ward 17 in the Matjhabeng Municipality – FS184.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 90.70% of the votes cast compared to 83.72% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 35.78%.
  • Lehlohonolo Enoch Ramajoe in Ward 20 in the Moqhaka Municipality – FS201.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 87.97% of the votes cast compared to 87.66% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 36.04%.
  • Imtiaz Ahmed Loonat in Ward 29 in the Ekurhuleni Municipality – EKU.The party won the seat from the DA who won the seat in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 51.48% compared to 43.86% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 29.43%.
  • Abram Tholani Mazula in Ward 21 in the Rand West City Municipality – GT485.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 79.35% of the votes cast compared to 56.30% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 25.24%.
  • Mpilenhle Eldridge Mkhize in Ward 03 in the Ethekwini Municipality –
    ETH.
    The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 44.59% of the votes cast compared to 44.00% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 44.02%.
  • Shunmoogam Naidoo in Ward 30 in the Msunduzi Municipality – KZN225.The party won the seat from the DA who won the seat in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 47.83% compared to 52.87% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 27.75%.
  • Nomsa Margaret Mayeza in Ward 09 in the Greater Kokstad Municipality –
    KZN433.
    The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 86.52% of the votes cast compared to 64.12% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 28.19%.
  • Dimakatso Elvis Ramogale in Ward 04 in the Modimollemookgophong Municipality – LIM368.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 60.64% of the votes cast compared to 60.93% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 40.51%.
  • Mxolisi Sibeko in Ward 12 in the Msukaligwa Municipality – MP302.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 66.31% of the votes cast compared to72.00% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 40.02%.
  • Thulisile Doreen Malahle in Ward 15 in the Emalahleni Municipality – MP312.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 57.42% of the votes cast compared to 67.73% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 24.97%.
  • Magashe David Mmargetloa in Ward 29 in the Emalahleni Municipality – MP312.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 63.83% of the votes cast compared to 74.41% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 23.71%.
  • Jabulani Jackson Mhlanga in Ward 02 in the City of Mbombela Municipality – MP326.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 88.65% of the votes cast compared to 84.02% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 24.13%.
  • Hendrick Baleseng Mogotsi in Ward 26 in the Rustenburg Municipality – NW373.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 71.79% of the votes cast compared to 70.29% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 42.47%.
  • Jacques Hermanus Nicolaas Klaaste in Ward 05 in the Hantam Municipality – NC065.The party won the seat from the DA who won the seat in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 49.47% compared to 45.85% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 68.84%.

The ten (10) new DA councillors are:

  • Hermanus Albertus Deysel in Ward 10 in the Enoch Mgijima Municipality – EC139.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 73.73% of the votes cast compared to 60.44% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 34.71%.
  • Amanda Davison in Ward 15 in the Ekurhuleni Municipality – EKU.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 63.79% of the votes cast compared to 87.91% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 27.64%.
  • Nicolette Claudine Kiewietz in Ward 08 in the Rand West City Municipality – GT485.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 55.23% of the votes cast compared to 45.85% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 27.74%.
  • Ernest Grenville Smith in Ward 27 in Ethekwini Municipality – ETH.T The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 87.52% of the votes cast compared to 77.17% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was19.59%.
  • Charmaine Odette Clayton in Ward 31 in Ethekwini Municipality – ETH.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 73.70% of the votes cast compared to 62.67% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 17.87%.
  • Nicole Jane Bollman in Ward 35 in Ethekwini Municipality – ETH.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 80.88% of the votes cast compared to 77.68% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 29.72%.
  • Michelle Lutchmen in Ward 48 in Ethekwini Municipality – ETH.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 34.57% of the votes cast compared to 53.42% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 25.65%.
  • Magalingam Naicker in Ward 28 in Msunduzi Municipality – KZN225.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 48.74% of the votes cast compared to 73.26% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 24.34%.
  • Rowan Torr in Ward 30 in City of Mbombela Municipality – MP326.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 71.48% of the votes cast compared to 70.62% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 29.05%.
  • Johan Cornel Cronje in Ward 16 in Rustenburg Municipality – NW373.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 73.26% of the votes cast compared to 59.65% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 24.83%.

The one (1) new IFP councillor is:

  • Msawenkosi Lindokuhle Ngidi in Ward 02 in the Maphumulo Municipality – KZN294.The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 55.75% of the votes cast compared to 63.38% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 55.43%.
