Another PE gangster jailed for murder and attempted murder

The Provincial Gang Investigation Unit celebrated yet another victory after securing  a lengthy jail sentence for a gang affiliate in the Port Elizabeth Regional Court on Wednesday. 

"On 20 August 2015, two couples were walking in Aandblom Street in Arcadia when two men called the women. By this time they were standing in front of a well-known drug post in Reyners Street," said police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

"The men enquired from the women whether their partners were someone they were looking for.  As the women replied in the negative, the suspects spotted the person they were looking for.

"Jason Malusi (approx. 18 at the time) was seen knocking on the door of a house . One of the suspect’s  fired several shots at him, killing him."

Col Naidu said that the couples were also shot at while fleeing.

"One person (a male aged 25) was injured in the shoulder." 

She about three months after the incident, one of the witnesses was killed in a gang-related shooting.

A week after the murder, the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit arrested the two suspects at a house in Arcadia.

"During the course of the investigation, one suspect was released as there was insufficient evidence against him. However, the accused, Reneal Seagal (21)of the Hondekoppe gang remained in custody until sentencing," Col Naidu said.

"Today, he was sentenced to an effective 37 years imprisonment after being found guilty on charges of murder, attempted murder x2, possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition." 

The Cluster Commander for Mount Road, Maj Gen Thembisile Patekile, congratulated the investigating officer and the prosecuting authority for continuously ensuring that gang affiliates that are arrested , remain behind bars.

"Our detectives work tirelessly around the clock to arrest these suspects who commit  senseless attacks on the community. We will continue to assert our authority in these hotspot areas and through our Back to Basics approach of policing,   we will fulfil our obligations to the people of Port Elizabeth, who are depending on us for their safety and security," added Maj gen Patekile.
