App developer gets nod at PE leg of 2017 ENGEN Pitch & Polish

Local interactive educational app developer and entrepreneur, Bongani Mngaza, walked away with the first prize at the 2017 Eastern Cape leg of the ENGEN Pitch & Polish Entrepreneurial workshop over the weekend.

Now in its 8th year, the ENGEN Pitch & Polish has helped approximately 10 000 entrepreneurs to improve the way they present their business to potential funders. Having a polished pitch is the key to growing your business!

This year’s event was hosted by bestselling author and TV show presenter, Justin Cohen, at the East Cape Training Centre on Saturday.

Walking to the stand was not easy for many of the hopefuls, who are only given a few seconds to answer four questions that immediately make the potential investors become investors, but Bongani Mngaza managed to wow the audience and walk away with R6 000 as well as a ticket to the national competition.

Mngaza is an Information technology (IT) graduate from the Nelson Mandela University, who invented an educational learning application called Sgela Saam, which was launched earlier this year.

The application is aiming to help the Eastern Cape - and South Africa, improve its pass rate by allowing learners and teachers to share study material, which includes past papers and their problem solving methods.

Mngaza told RNEWS that confidence boosted his chances at the competition.

“I know what I want and where I’m heading and I think that’s what worked for me and I am very much excited for winning because that is what I wanted this year.”

He also acknowledged the ENGEN Pitch & Polish workshop for providing much-needed entrepreneurial training for emerging businesses.

“I need an i7 laptop to make things easier for me because I have been struggling to work and I am grateful to ENGEN Pitch & Polish because now I will be able to work with a reliable laptop,” Mngaza said.

ENGEN Pitch & Polish, in collaboration with Engen Petroleum, Nedbank, and Raizcorp, culminates in a final event held in Johannesburg where the winners of the regional rounds compete to be crowned the ultimate pitch champion of 2017!

“It is widely held that growing and nurturing business skills for emerging entrepreneurs in South Africa will boost employment and help alleviate poverty, as well as empower a significant portion of the population. By sponsoring Pitch & Polish, Engen is contributing towards creating a sustainable entrepreneurial culture in the country, creating jobs, and helping transform the national business landscape by equipping these entrepreneurs with better capabilities to sustainably grow their respective businesses.” says Unathi Njokweni-Magida, Transformation Head at Engen Petroleum.

“At Nedbank, we are committed to using our financial expertise to do good for individuals, families, businesses and society. Our Pitch & Polish partnership goes a long way in realising this commitment.” says Alan Shannon, head of Nedbank Relationship Banking Sales.
