Port Elizabeth - Walmer police in Port Elizabeth are urgently seeking the community’s assistance in tracing the mother of a newly-born baby found dumped at the Arlington tip.

"It is alleged that at about 12:30 on Wednesday afternoon, police were summoned after stray cows were seen hovering around a black plastic bag at the dumpsite," said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"The baby was found naked in the bag.

"Police suspect that the child may have been lying there for about a week."

She said that the race and gender could not be established at this stage.

"An inquest docket has been opened."

Police is appealing to anyone, who can assist in tracing the mother to contact SAPS Walmer on 041 509 4006.
