Armed gang got stuck between houses while fleeing from Port Elizabeth police

Two suspects are expected in court soon after they were arrested by Port Elizabeth police after a brazen armed robbery at Spar Bluewaterbay, in Port Elizabeth, on Thursday night, that ended up in a high speed police chase and shootout.

"This followed after Bluewater Bay Spar was robbed by four suspects at 19:20," said police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge.

"They entered the Spar shooting in the air and cleaning out all the cashiers and also taking cartons of cigarettes. They fled in a silver Audi, which was spotted shortly thereafter in Fergusson Road, New Brighton, by Flying Squad members."

He said that a car chase ensued and there was an exchange of gunshot fire in the process.

"This ended when the driver of the Audi attempted to drive between two houses and got stuck.

"Five suspects jumped out of the vehicle still shooting at police," Captain Beetge said.

"The SAPS members returning fire wounded a 26-year-old suspect at the vehicle, and arrested him with a 9mm firearm in his possession next to him.

"Another 22-year-old suspect was also wounded and arrested in the premises of a nearby house while he attempted to evade arrest."

Three suspects managed to get away.

"On closer inspection of the vehicle, two more fire arms was confiscated as well as cartons of cigarettes,' said Captain Beetge.

"It was also established that the audi was hijacked in New Brighton last month."
