One suspect was arrested at the Qumbu shop after sustaining a gun shot wound

Mthatha - A 28-year-old suspect was arrested after he and his three accomplices tried to rob a local shop in Qumbu town on Tuesday, at about 17h00.

"It is alleged that four unknown men, all armed with pistols, entered the shop and tried to rob money, but were overcame by the shop security guards, who fired shots to the suspects," described police spokesperson, Captain Dineo Koena.

"They fled the scene, but one suspect could not flee further because he sustained a bullet wound on his upper body and was arrested."

She said that a 9mm pistol (serial number erased) with two live rounds was found on his possession.

"He was rushed to hospital in a stable condition."

Capt Koena said that in an effort to arrest the other suspects, police made a chase and another 33-year-old man was found near the forest and was taken in for questioning whilst other two escaped arrest to the nearby forest.

"Cases of attempted robbery and attempted murder are being investigated and the arrested one will appear before Qumbu Court soon."

Suspect arrested after woman hijacked at her workplace in Mthatha

She said that in another incident, a 27-year-old man was arrested after he hijacked a motor vehicle from its lawful owner at the Prd building, in Mthatha, on Tuesday at about 16h45.

"It is alleged that the owner was from her office to her vehicle at the parking lot when she was approached by the suspect who ordered her to give him the car keys and afterwards fled," Capt Koena described.

"The victim raised the alarm to the security guards at the gate, who assisted in arresting the suspect.

"He will appear before Mthatha Magistrate Court soon facing a charge of hijacking."

Mthatha SAPS Cluster Commander, Brigadier Mandlakhe Twala, said; "We applaud the security guards for their efforts in assisting us to arrest the suspects. If we all work together we can defeat the perpetrators of crime."
