Grahamstown police have been commended following the arrest of six suspected armed robbers at an accident scene on Monday morning.

"In the early hours of this morning, members of the Grahamstown highway patrol were busy at an accident scene on the N2 near Seven Fountains," described police spokesperson, Capt Mali Govender.

"A BMW approached the scene and was stopped by the members.

"There were six occupants in the vehicle. The members then searched the vehicle and found an undisclosed amount of cash and air time."

She added that two 9mm pistols, several 9mm roundd and toy gas-gun was also found in the vehicle and seized.

"Preliminary investigations suggests that the suspects are possibly linked to a robbery that took place on Sunday elsewhere in the province."

The suspects now face several charges including possession of unlicensed firearms and unlawful possession of ammunition.

"This is the kind of work we are expecting from all our high way patrols. Well done to the Grahamstown High Way patrol. As a result of your vigilance, a robbery has been solved within 24 hrs. This is a best practice that when robbery is reported all high way patrols must be vigilant," said Lt Gen Ntshinga, Eastern Cape SAPS Provincial Commissioner.
