Armed teen fails to outrun Port Elizabeth police

A 19-year-old Bethelsdorp man was arrested after being outrun by police after an extensive foot and vehicle chase that took place on Wednesday in Bloemendal, Port Elizabeth.

"At about 11:30, members of SAPS Betheldsorp Task Team were patrolling in Brandt Street when they noticed two males moving suspiciously into an alley after they spotted the police vehicle," described police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"As the police vehicle pulled up next to the alley, one of the males started running.

"Two members alighted from the vehicle and pursued after him on foot. The chase continued into William Slammert Drive and finally ended in Denson Street."

She said that the suspect was kept in sight throughout the chase by members in the vehicle and on foot.

"The teenager jumped over several walls of houses and was finally cornered by the members in a yard in Denson Street.

"On backtracking, a .38 revolver and six rounds of ammunition was found thrown in one of the yard’s that the suspect jumped into," Col Naidu said.

"He was detained on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition. He will appear in court on Friday."
