Authentic old-school charm: Experience true PE hospitality at Ingleton Lodge

Simple yet stylish and infused with some old-school charm” were the first thoughts that came to my mind during a recent stay at Ingleton Lodge.

Located just off Cape Road in Mill Park, Ingleton Lodge is not only among the oldest and most charming lodges in the Bay; it is also surrounded by Port Elizabeth’s various holiday attractions, shopping centres and is ten minutes’ drive from the beachfront.

The lodge was originally a home and has been beautifully restored, which is most evident in its Oregon floors and pressed ceilings, to offer guests warm hospitality in a quiet setting.

Having somewhat misjudged my timing and arrived a bit late, I managed to meet up with Ingleton’s owner, Mary Rathbone, who proceeded to show me around the lodge.

There are twenty one rooms on offer with single, double or family options. I immediately took a liking to my Indonesian Suite, which was conveniently situated adjacent to a large pool and had a spacious veranda with wooden benches.

Although the setting of my suite was inspired by the Asian nation from which it derived it’s name, it also had a strong South African flavour with a beautiful wooden table, television cabinet, framed mirror and night stands.

Added comfort came in the form of a king-size bed, TV with DSTV, an en-suite bathroom with separate shower and toilet, a tea/coffee station, a mini-fridge and air-conditioning.

After unpacking, I took a leisurely walk through the property and found Ingleton Lodge to be bigger than I initially perceived as it is built on two properties which are connected by a grass walk-way. I also found, next to the reception area, a well-stocked bar with a flat-screen TV and pool table.

I turned in early and, in testament to the comfort of my room, slept deep and long.

The following morning, I woke refreshed and made my way to the dining area and indulged in a delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, chicken sausage, toast and a glass of juice.

Sadly, my stay had come to an end, but not before I had determined that Ingleton exhibits the perfect mix of comfort, old-school charm and authentic PE hospitality.
