Badly assaulted body found in Soweto-on-sea in latest mob justice incident

The badly assaulted body of an unknown male, estimated to be about 30 years old, was found in Qeqe Street, Soweto-on-sea, Port Elizabeth, on Monday morning at about 05:00 as police investigate a spate of mob justice incidents in the area.

"It is suspected that he was beaten with blunt objects and cuts made to his legs by unknown assailants.

"A murder case was opened at Kwazakele police station, but it is not ruled out that this murder could have been a vigilante or revenge attack," said police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge.

"Any person with information to assist police in identifying the person or be of assistance with the investigation, can contact Lt Col Tembani Mapuma on 082 394 9744."

Last week Monday, Port Elizabeth warned against vigilante or 'mob justice' after three separate incidents that left two people dead and another critical in hospital happened over the previous weekend.

In all three incidents, the community alleged that the men were killed because they were house robbers.

On Friday, two suspected vigilante or revenge attacks left two dead and one injured in the Veeplaas and Soweto-on-sea area early that morning.

The Kwazakele Station Commander, Brigadier Lindelwa Vellem, emphasized that; "Anyone caught taking the law into their own hands will be prosecuted".

She also added that police embarked on an outreach program with community leaders in a attempt to discourage and prevent vigilante attacks.
