Bay Irish dancers bring home Gold

McWilliams Academy of Dance is the only Irish Dancing Studio in the Eastern Cape and is based in Port Elizabeth.

“Irish Dancing is very young in South Africa, with SA Champs being only in its 11th year. Having said that, the competition and the standard is very high,” said Vanessa Forbes of McWilliams Academy of Dance.

“Our dancers attend as many competitions as possible throughout the year. As you can imagine, it’s a very costly affair, as most of the big competitions are in Johannesburg or Cape Town,” explained Vanessa.

Several of their dancers took part in the inaugural 'City of Gold' Irish dancing competition on the 2nd of September.

This event was held at Carnival City in Johannesburg and was the final opportunity for dancers to compete before the SA Championships, which is taking place on the 29th of September.  The seven dancers did very well and amassed 8 gold and 5 silver medals!

  • Miss Jenna Hayes came first in the 15-19 years championship
  • Miss Courtney Pearce came first in the senior championship 20 years and over
  • Miss Isabella Scott came first in the pre-championships level 1

“Our dancers will generally bring home medals from each competition, but we aren’t always lucky enough to win the pre-championship and championship categories, so it’s a good day at the office, when we are able to bring home the gold,” said Vanessa.

“Our dance teacher and owner, Jennifer McWilliams, is exceptionally proud of her dancers’ accomplishments and their dedication and commitment.”
