Baywest Mall introduces major firsts for Eastern Cape retail

Baywest Mall, the Eastern Cape’s largest and most anticipated retail and entertainment centre, is upping the ante among the region’s retailers by introducing major high-end brands to the province when the mall opens its doors on May 21.

With more than 250 exciting outlets, the R1.7 billion super regional mall today (April 1) announced it had secured major fashion and entertainment firsts for the province ahead of its grand opening next month.

Announcing the major coup for Eastern Cape retail, Baywest Mall general manager Sonja de Necker said the new brands would be accompanied by major national retailers whose bigger stores would carry a greater product catalogue for shoppers to choose from.

The major firsts for the province announced by Baywest Mall includes: 

  • A Ster-KinekorIMAX cinema and Ster-Kinekorluxury movie experience, Cine Prestige;
  • British high street fashion brand River Island;
  • Exclusive London footwear and accessory brand Dune;
  • Canadian lingerie label La Senza;
  • Iconic British fashion brand Topshop;
  • US baked goods sensation Cinnabon; and
  • Popular global outlet The Bubble Tea Company, among others.

De Necker said the investment by the major brands in the mall showed confidence in the region and in the Baywest business model. Nedbank Corporate Property Finance had believed in the project enough to finance it to the tune of R1.7 billion –the largest property development sum agreed to by the bank at that time –and from there confidence by the major brands followed, she said.

“Baywest has provided the right infrastructure and worked tirelessly with its leasing team to attract a diverse tenant mix. With the right tenant mix, the brands have followed.”

De Necker said the mall would celebrate “Opening Season” from May 21st–a several-week long run of festivities and celebrations. Details surrounding the mall’s grand opening would be revealed in the coming weeks, she said.

Baywest marketing manager Samantha Hewitson said other firsts for the region included a Champagne and Sushi Bar, headed by acclaimed Eastern Cape restaurateur and owner of FushinSushi Bar, Mark Oosthuizen.

In a first for South Africa, said Hewitson, food giant Famous Brands had unveiled new look stores and menus which will appear at its Baywest Mall eateries. Fishaways, Steers and Debonairsat Baywest are the first Famous Brands outlets in the country to show off their new look stores and menus.

“Fun lovers have also not been left out as they have the province’s only ice rink to skate up a storm. Housed within the mall’s Fun Factory entertainment zone, The Ice Rink will run a skating academy for novices as well as up-and-coming ice skating champions, while schools and amateur sports leagues will be eligible for special discounts,” Hewitson said.

“The Fun Factory also has a state-of-the-art games arcade featuring the latest games and entertainment attractions from the US. A bowling alley is also part of the many Fun Factory attractions, as is a wing of high-tech, luxury Ster-Kinekorcinemas,” she said.

Hewitson said Baywest Mall had been promising “big things”.

“This impressive line up of fashion, food and entertainment brands truly lives up to this promise and will change the face of retail for the region,” Hewitson said.

“More than this, the entire shopping experience within the mall promises to be unique and innovative one, with cutting edge technologies ahead of the curve, even for South Africa.”

The mall would offer major new and national brands all under one roof, coupled with a diverse entertainment offering to suit both young and old, said Hewitson. New cutting edge technologies to be incorporated by the mall –to be unveiled in the coming weeks –would also dramatically change shoppers’ retail experience, she said.
