The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) recently donated fencing to Bethelsdorp Comprehensive High School in the Northern Areas, Port Elizabeth.

The act of kindness by the CDC as a responsible and caring institution is informed by the organisations Corporate Social Investment (CSI) policy. The CDC’s CSI approach is premised on a demonstrable, positive developmental impact, with greater emphasis on investing in communities in which the CDC operates.

“The CDC’s seeks to make long-term and sustainable investments in communities throughout the country, particularly focusing on the communities in which we operate in. Some of the areas we focus in include rural development, health, crime, corruption prevention, sport and, recreation,” says Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC Unit Head: Marketing, Brand and Corporate Communications

The donation by the CDC will go a long way in addressing school safety and security in and around the school premises. Learners will be able to concentrate on their educational tasks knowing that the environment they are in is safe and secure.

Brenley Bruiners, Head of Maths and Science department at Bethelsdorp Comprehensive High School (CHS) highlighted that, “the palisade fencing will eliminate outside factors such as civilians trying to start fights in and around the school premises, minimise drug smuggling as well as prohibit students from bunking school.”

“Ever since the installation of the fence by Coega we have seen a vast drop in break-ins and vandalism at the school,” adds Bruiners.

According to Bruiners, Bethelsdorp CHS has over 41 years been without adequate fencing. This has led to vandalism and theft of property as well as the hiring of unarmed night security guards.

“I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Coega and their management for making the school a safer environment where effective teaching and learning can take place,” says Leon Arendse, principal of Bethelsdorp Comprehensive High School.
