JJ Zondeki Community Hall in Joza, Makhanda will be the place to be when Mfuzo Boxing Club celebrates 23 years of existence this Saturday.

“October is an important Month for us in the annual calendar. Remember, it was in October 1995 when we started this boxing gymnasium out of the need to identify and nurture untapped talent in this area, “said Mfuza Dyira, the club’s founding president.

For this 23rd annual event Mfuzo Boxing Club was expecting clubs from as far afield as Bethlehem in the Free State Province, North West Province, Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage, Seymour, Whittlesea and Alwal North.

“We are expecting local boxing fans to come in droves to support us on this our 23rd annual event as they used to do in the past years and, we have managed to raise the bar in terms of our boxers’ abilities in the ring,” said National Boxing Ring Official and Coach Dyira whose gymnasium has managed to produce a number of highly regarded professional boxers as well as male and female boxing coaches of high standard throughout the years.

Mfuzo Boxing Club coach Tyson Dibela said his boxers from all categories, that is, cadet (from 14-16 years) Juniors (15-16 years) Youth (17-18) and Elite from 19 to 40 years of age were as fit as a fiddle and ready to rumble since they had known about this annual tournament a long time ago.

“This year we are proud to showcase the abilities of Siphowethu Dawethi, the national female 64kg champion who’s in the finals in the team selected to represent South Africa in national competitions,” Dyira said, adding that boxing fans would love watching the lass trading leather in the previously male-dominated sport.

Dyira thanked the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) in the Local Municipality as well as Makana Brick for the support in the form of trophies and medals for this tournament. Admission is R30 adults and R15 children.

Dyira also revealed that his busy stable will also be releasing his three professional boxers namely, Sonwabo Twatwa, Lubabalo Bokuva and Siphosethu Zingela to fight in three different tournaments this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
