BREAKFAST AND LUNCH: The Hedges serves a unique dining experience

BREAKFAST AND LUNCH: The Hedges serves a unique dining experience

Port Elizabeth is widely known as the ‘Friendly City’ and no café embodies this sense like The Hedges Coffee Shop which I visited with a work colleague for a lunch time break. The shop is conveniently located at 151 Main Road (behind the Pick Fruit premises) in Walmer, Port Elizabeth.

Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the hostess, Juanette, before she escorted us to our table - all with a smile.

The Hedges is well laid out. Seating is provided in two dining areas as well as outside – on a patio surrounded by luscious trees. The venue felt warm and welcoming. I found the dining area to be incredibly spacious, which added to an overall feeling of relaxation in the place.

I learnt that the coffee shop also had a lot of history behind it. It was established in the early 1900’s as a welcome tea stop after a train trip from the harbour. Old photos of the original tea garden and patrons can be found hanging in one of the dining rooms.

The Hedges offers farm-style, fresh home-cooked meals. In the cake display, was an inviting assortment of apple crumble, Mocha chocolate cheese and carrot cakes among other delights - all homemade. Their menu was equally appetising and featured a diverse selection of dishes to suit any palate.

Juanette also informed us of their daily specials. On this particular day, you could have their Roast Lamb and a choice of vegetables with a dessert for an impressive R44. I ordered a cup of Lavazza coffee - and must admit that I was quite impressed with its presentation. The Hedges have certainly perfected their artisan coffee making.

For my meal, I selected their Oriental Chicken Noodles served with Honey and Soya, while my colleague opted for their Cottage pie and a salad as a side order. My chicken was not only tasty but was generously served with big pieces of juicy chicken.

Judging by the nods from my colleague, she enjoyed her meal just as much and would pause in-between to describe how the pie reminded her of granny’s kitchen. Good food makes for good conversation!

After our lunch, we looked around the venue. The Hedges is well suited for small functions, hen parties, birthday parties and other special events of up to a 100 people. They also cater for corporate functions and can deliver to your premises as well as provide the waitressing.
