King Williams Town - The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality celebrated Heritage Month at the end of last week at Fort Murray Great Place near King William’s Town.

The celebrations kicked off with a welcome address by Ward Councillor Kholiwe Faku who encouraged the youth to take pride of their culture and heritage.

“The event is important as many are here to restore Ubuntu, especially during this time of gender-based violence and xenophobic attacks,” said Faku.

The event was graced by chiefs, princesses, councillors including Xhosa King Zwelonke Sigcawu.

Addressing the guests in his keynote address the Executive Mayor Xola Pakati spoke about the importance of heritage, arts and culture.

“We are here to celebrate our heritage. This is a very crucial month in which we celebrate the heritage of our people. We need to embrace our culture all the time, this day is a day of restoration of our identity,” said Pakati.

Pakati added that, government’s plea to all South Africans is to take pride in our African identity and play an active role in affirming, promoting and preserving their heritage.

“The country is known for its rich cultural and ethnic diversity and South Africans need to reclaim and fully assert our identity to ensure that our diverse and unique culture unite us as a nation,” he said.

The day saw various traditional groups such as Amandlambe Cultural Group and Lumanyano Cultural Group that include dancing, singing traditional songs and poetry.
