Buffalo City Metro traffic warns drivers, who continue to drink and drive

East London - Buffalo City Metro traffic and law enforcement has issued a stern warning to local motorists, who continue to drink and drive...

"This follows the arrest of 40 motorists for alleged drinking and driving over the last two weekends," the Metro said.

"BCM Traffic Chief Commander Quinton Chetty said the operations were aimed at curbing alcohol related fatalities on the road ahead of the festive season.

"Traffic officials are now using the new Evidential Breath Alcohol Testing (EBAT) device which delivers instant results."

It said that anti-drunken driving operations this weekend netted 29 suspects in the City’s Inland region as follows:

  • 7 Arrests in Berlin area,
  • 12 Arrests in Bhisho area,
  • 5 Arrests in Zwelitsha area, and
  • 5 Arrests in the King Williams Town area.

Last weekend, the drunken driving operations in Coastal region statistics were as follows:

  • B/Bay SAPS x 2
  • B/Bay Law Enf x 1
  • Cambridge Traffic x 5
  • Cambridge SAPS x 16
  • Cambridge Law Enf x 1
  • MDT SAPS x 4
  • MDT Traffic x 3
  • E/L Law Enf x 1
  • EL SAPS x 3
  • E/L Traffic x 2
  • D/V SAPS x 2
  • Scenery Park SAPS x 1

"The total number of drivers arrested for drunken driving is 40."
