Bulletproof vest saves Port Elizabeth cop's life after gangsters open fire

Police in Port Elizabeth are investigating a case of attempted murder after a member of the Port Elizabeth Gang had a lucky escape after being shot in the back by suspected gangsters.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said members of the Visible Gang Intervention Unit were patrolling Malabar Ext 5 at around 8pm on Wednesday night when they noticed a group of six to seven men.

When the two officers alighted from their vehicle, the group shot at the officers.

That was when a bullet hit one of the Constable's in his back.

“Although the bullet hit the bullet-proof vest, no injury was sustained by the constable," said Col Naidu.

"A bullet also struck the police vehicle.”

She said that the bulletproof vest saved the officer from serious injury or even death.

The suspects fled the scene and a case of attempted murder has been opened.
