Butterworth Court jails accused Vusumzi Mjongile to 10 years for rape

The Butterworth Regional Magistrate’s Court sentenced a 23-year-old man, Vusumzi Mjongile, to 10 years in jail for raping a 33-year-old woman in 2016.

"The sentencing came after he raped a 33-year-old woman at Zazulwana Village, Ibika Locality, on the 22nd May 2016 at about 23h30," said police spokesperson, Capt Jackson Manath.

"The victim was coming from a traditional ceremony with her three-year-old child. They arrived at the woman’s room and slept in separate beds.

"While she was sleeping, she woke up with forcing himself on her. She went to the neighbours and reported the matter and police were called."

Vusumzi Mjongile arrested by the Butterworth FCS unit

Capt Manatha said that a case of rape was registered at Msobomvu  Police Station.

"The case was handed over to Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual offences Unit (FCS)," he added.

"Mjongile was traced and arrested."

Butterworth SAPS Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, has welcomed the sentencing of the accused.

He hoped that the sentence will serve as a deterrent to all other men who still think of raping and abusing women and children."
