Butterworth man accused of brutal 2016 rape remanded in custody

A 31-year-old Butterworth man accused of raping a 20-year-old woman briefly appeared before the Dutywa Magistrate's Court on Monday and was not asked to plead. The case was remanded to the 23rd of January for a formal bail application and the accused was remanded in custody.

The accused cannot be identified as he not yet pleaded to the charge of rape.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Jackson  Manatha, the Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) arrested the 31-year-old man on Saturday for the alleged rape.

"The victim was alone at the residence of her friend at Rwantsini Location, Taleni Village, Dutywa," described Captain Manatha.

"The suspect arrived at the homestead where the victim was alone on 05 August 2016, at about 19:00.

"The suspect is alleged to have persuaded the victim to fall in love with him. The request of the suspect was turned down."

He then assaulted the victm and raped her.

"The suspect then ran away until he was finally arrested on Saturday."
