Butterworth man gets 8 years behind bars for raping 67-year-old woman

The Butterworth Regional Magistrate’s Court on Thursday sentenced a 31-year-old man, Sikhumbule Mdlambuzi, to 18 years behind bars for the rape of a 67-year-old woman.

"It is alleged that the 67-year-old victim was preparing to sleep on the 31 March 2017, at about 21:00, at Mzantsi Village, Butterworth," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"She heard a window that was being broken.

"When she was about to scream, the accused grabbed her and took her down.

"He raped the victim and thereafter he took on his heels."

Captain Manatha said that the victim later identified the accused.

"She reported the case of rape at Butterworth Police station.

"The case was professionally and properly investigated by Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS)," he added.

"The accused was traced and later arrested."

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, welcomed the sentence imposed on the accused.

He is of the view that the sentence will serve as a deterrent to other would be rapists.
