Butterworth man jailed for 19 years for raping boy

Butterworth - The Butterworth Regional Magistrate’s Court convicted and sentenced a 28-year-old man, Yandisa Jonas, for raping a 12-year-old boy.

"The accused was sentenced on Thursday to undergo 19 years imprisonment," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"It is alleged that on the 27th of November 2017, at about 09h35, the victim was fetching water from the communal tap at Eziteneni Informal Settlement near Bika Township, Butterworth.

"The accused person came across the victim and dragged him to his shack where he raped the 12-year-old boy."

Capt Manatha said that a case of rape was registered at Msobomvu Police Station.

"The case was handed over to Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for further investigation. The accused was traced and later arrested."

Eastern Cape SAPS Police Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, has welcomed the conviction and sentence of the accused person.

She appealed to women and children - irrespective of gender, to break the silence whenever they are abused.
