Butterworth men accused of stabbing and robbing Swiss tourist remanded in custody

Three men accused accused of stabbing and robbing a Swiss tourist briefly appeared before the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The case against Azola Silinga, aged 32;  Lazola Ngwane, aged 23; and Lusanda Magobhiyane, aged 27, was postponed to the 20th of  February for bail application.

"All of them remained in custody," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

He said that the trio have been charged with robbery with a knife and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

"It is alleged that a 51-year-old Switzerland tourist had a booked at a local hotel on Thursday last week," Capt Manatha said.

"On the evening in question, at about 19h00, he decided to go and buy food at a local food outlet."

Swiss tourist assaulted and robbed

Capt Manatha said that while he was taking money from his car, the suspects stabbed him on his upper body.

"They robbed him of undisclosed amount of money. The bag of money had Euro and Swiss dollars."

He said that the suspects were traced and arrested on Saturday at Mzantsi Locality, Mission Village, Butterworth.

"All the foreign currency was recovered from the suspects."

Acting Butterworth Cluster Commander, Colonel Ncedo Ngwendze, praised the swift reaction of Butterworth police detectives in arresting the suspects.
