Butterworth rapist sentenced to 16 years imprisonment

The Butterworth Regional Magistrate Court on Friday morning sentenced Malinge Mambumbu to 16 years in prison after he was found guilty of raping a 23-year old woman at gunpoint in the town’s Mazizini Location.

The incident took place on the 14th of March 2015 at about 20:30pm. Mambumbu was arrested the following day although he refused to cooperate with officers.

“During his appearance in court, he pleaded not guilty claiming that the victim was his girlfriend. It came out during the court proceedings that the accused had lied,” Eastern Cape police said.

According to the police, Mambumbu had threatened to shoot the victim and dragged her to his place where he raped her repeatedly.

The court also declared Mambumbu unfit to possess a firearm.

Butterworth Cluster Commander Brigadier Stanley Sibhidla welcomed the sentenced.

“I hope that the sentence will serve as a lesson to would-be other rapists.”
