Port Elizabeth - Due to the declaration of ward vacancies in the two Eastern Cape Metropolitan Municipalities as well as in two other Local Municipalities, the IEC will be conducting voter registration this weekend - 03 and 04 August 2019.

 The four municipalities where the by-elections are scheduled are:

  • Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (Ward 20);
  • Buffalo City Metro (Ward 19);
  • Engcobo Local Municipality (Ward 15); and
  • King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality (Ward 29).

Accoring to the IEC in the Eastern Cape's Julie Stanworth, the vacancies have occurred due to the following reasons:

  • In Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, the by-election follows the conviction and incarceration of ANC Councillor, Bongo Nombiba;
  • In the Buffalo City Metro, the by-election follows the death of DA Councillor;
  • In Engcobo Local Municipality, the by-election follows the death of an ANC Councillor
  • In King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality, the by-election follows the conviction and incarceration of an ANC Councillor.

"The electoral commission is calling on residents in these wards to ensure they are registered and if not, they go and register in order to participate in the by elections that will be held on 18 September 2019," she said.

"Voting stations within the affected wards will be open for registration from 08h00 to 17h00 on both days, 03 & 04 August 2019."

Stanworth said that in the affected wards of Nelson Mandela Metro, there are currently 8 873 registered voters;  in Buffalo City Metro 8 054 registered voters; in Engcobo Municipality 4 060 registered voters and in King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality 6 382 registered voters.

"A reminder that in order to be able to vote you need to be a registered voter and to bring your green bar-coded ID book, smart ID card or a valid temporary identity certificate with to the voting station," she said.

"It is a criminal offence to register in a ward where you don’t reside."
