Cala man who killed mother and aunt over witchcraft and fled now expected in court

Eager to ensure that the killer of Nowezile Mbulali and Noluthando Sondlo is brought to justice, detectives working on the case pursued every avenue which resulted in the arrest of a 42-year-old suspect on Tuesday evening in Cala near Queenstown.

"The task team under the leadership of Capt Mziwanele Mayongo worked tirelessly tracing the suspect, until they received valuable information about the whereabouts of the suspect who was traced in Cala at her sister’s home," said police spokesperson, Colonel Sibongile Soci.

"The two elderly women, aged 78 and 59 years, were attacked and murdered by the suspect at Sundwana Locality, Ngcobo, near Mthatha on 02 July 2017 at about 16:00.

"It is alleged that the suspect was involved in a motor vehicle accident on his way home."

Colonel Soci said that the suspect then accused the two family members of practicing witchcraft and bewitching him.

"He stabbed the mother and walked to the aunt’s homestead where he also attacked and murdered her before fleeing the scene."

The suspect will appear in the Ngcobo Magistrates Court on Thursday on charges of murder.

“We commend the task team for the arrest of the suspect. The arrest is meeting the organisational objections of the SAPS and is in line with the Back to Basics policing approach too thoroughly and responsive investigation of every crime.

"This must also send a strong message to criminals that we will bring to book those who choose to attack innocent victims in their homes,” said Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga.
