Cape Townian Wins About IT Triathlon Summer Series - Round 3

Just under 100 triathletes from around South Africa took advantage of the great weather on Wednesday morning to take part in the penultimate round of the About IT Triathlon Summer Series at Pollok Beach.

The triathletes enjoyed an exciting route which saw each of the 3 legs completed over two laps starting with the 750m swim at Pollok Beach, then a 20km cycle through the University and finally ending with the 5km Run between Pollok Beach and Hobie Beach giving spectators a great vantage of the dual that unfolded.

Keegan Cooke of Port Elizabeth and Riaan Shaw of Cape Town lead the swim and bicycle legs before Shaw broke away in the first lap of the run to win the 3rd round in a fast time of 58min 54seconds with fellow Cape Townian Dylan Pivo in 2nd place just 19 seconds behind.

Current Series leader Johannes Moldan finished in 3rd place in 59 min 48sec after taking a wrong turn in the first lap of the cyclea and holds onto his overall Series lead from Cooke's older brother Jarryd with Ross Helliwell in third place. Keegan Cooke holds a comfortable lead in the Junior overall standings from Bloemfontein athlete Gean Viljoen and PE's Muhammad Allie.

"This was the second race of the Series for me and I really enjoyed the cycle route through Sumerstrand and the University as it's far more exciting for us athletes than the out and back route," said race winner Shaw. "A couple of us came down from Cape Town to take part in the Series as this is such a great and well organised event hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay and we don't have many such races in Cape Town."

The ladies race was won by Jade Hooke in a time of 1hr 11min and 14sec with Tanya Schutte from the Midrand in second place and Kris Mari Voges in third place. The round win takes Hooke into the overall Series lead with just one round remaining. Hooke, an international showjumper, has recently returned to Port Elizabeth and is making a welcome return to triathlon, one of her other passions in which she excels.

"The support this year from athletes outside of Port Elizabeth has been overwhelming and it's awesome to host an event like the About IT Triathlon Summer Series to give our athletes the opportunity to compete against some of the best in the country, " said Series Director Mike Zoetmulder from Zsports Events NPC.

The 4-race About IT Triathlon Summer Series will conclude at Port St Francis on Monday 26th with prizes valued at over R10,000 up for grabs including two R500 Caltex Fuel Vouchers and R7,500 cash for the overall Series winners. Other prizes will feature hampers from Series sponsors aQuellé, High 5 Nutrition and Bargain Buys. See www.zsports.co.za for full results and to register for Round 4 at Port St Francis.
