Case against 'lying' Port Elizabeth hospital 'radiographer' postponed

Port Elizabeth allegedly landed radiographer job at Livingstone Hospital after lying about radiography qualification

Port Elizabeth - A Port Elizabeth woman, who allegedly managed to work at the city's Livingstone Hospital as a radiographer for over six months with a false Radiography qualification, on Monday made a brief appearance before the Port Elizabeth Crimes Court for fraud.

25-year-old Asisipho Mbekela was arrested at the beginning of April for apparently lying to the Eastern Cape Department of Health when she indicated in her application that she had obtained a 'Radiography Nuclear Med' qualification at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, in Cape Town, in 2015.

It only emerged months after she started working at the Livingstone Hospital that Mbekela had actually failed all but one of her four subjects during her final examination for the radiography qualification.

Mbekela, who apparently Matricualted in Mthatha, had even scored below the minimum allowed for students to be allowed to write supplementary examinations.

Thus, she did not recieve the Diploma in Radiography she claimed to have.

Asisipho Mbekela managed to work as hospital radiographer without qualifications

Still, that did not stop her from taking a chance and it seemed she had managed to pull off what is commonly called qualifications fraud - a common practice given South Africa's high unemployment rates, even among university graduates.

Surveys have shown that the risk of hiring executives and specialists with bogus qualifications nowadays is very real. Just seeing a CV or certificate is no longer sufficient!

She was apparently hired in March 2016.

Still, given the complexity of radiography and the risks involved if the wrong radiation dose is used, there is no doubt about the danger she posed to both herself and patients at the Livingstone Hospital.

The Livingstone Hospital is a large Provincial government-funded hospital situated in Korsten, Port Elizabeth.

Upon the discovery in September of that year, she was summarily dismissed from her post at the hospital.

Mbekela's case was postponed to June and the State is expected to bring more charges against her.
