Case against New Year's Day rape accused postponed to Thursday

The case against a 49-year-old Butterworth man accused of raping an elderly woman on New Year's Day was postponed to Thursday for bail application. The man made his first court appearance in the Willowvale Magistrate's Court on Monday and was remanded in custody.

He was arrested on Sunday by the Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for allegedly raping an 86-year-old woman.

"The victim  was asleep alone on the 01 January 2017 at her home which is at Ntubeni Location, Nyokana Village, Willowvale," described police spokesperson, Captain Jackson  Manatha.

"The victim noticed a man in her bed already raping her. It was on the same night of 01 January 2017 at about 00:00. The victim did not close the door as she was waiting for the return of her children.

"The suspect left the scene and was not known by the victim."

Captain Manatha said that through intensive investigation by Butterworth FCS Unit, the suspect was finally arrested on Sunday.
