Challenge your fear: See it fly away at the Adrenalin Addo Giant Swing

Adrenaline rush - noun. A sudden burst of energy from an increase in the hormone and neurotransmitter adrenaline – or shall I say, an energy surge that I seem to never get enough of.

This is why I recently headed back to my all-time favourite destination for extreme thrill-seekers, Adrenalin Addo, in the Sundays River Valley. Situated a mere 50 minutes’ drive from Port Elizabeth, Adrenalin Addo is something that anyone who fancies themselves a dare devil ought to do before they die.

The place is all about doing things that would be considered ‘dangerous’ by the cautious – from a 500m long, 60m high zip line and a giant swing - the kinds of things that can make grown men and women whimper at the thought but then go ahead and do them anyway.

Having previously conquered their zip line - the longest double zip line in Africa, this time around, I was to try Adrenalin Addo’s Giant Swing, the first of its kind in South Africa.

With much enthusiasm, I roped in my boyfriend for a date with gravity – or an 18m high free fall to be exact. On arrival, we were greeted by the most remarkable views of the Addo countryside and fellow adrenalin junkies who whizzed past us across the valley on the zip lines.

After a quick prep and safety briefing from our guide, Lee, we were on our way to the giant swing. Moments later, we were being hoisted up the giant swing.

As we nervously enjoyed the magnificent Addo views and readied our stomachs, the swing was released and we were catapulted into oblivion! Oh my goodness, what a stimulating, crazy, amazing and wonderful experience.

As we landed on solid ground our nervy smiles transformed into sheer grins. If exhilaration and adrenalin-filled fun are what you are after, you now know where to go!

Adrenalin Addo, which is open every day of the week from 10am to 5pm, is also ideal for family outings. They have a jungle gym, a mini zip-line and self-hire canoes for a sedate paddle on the Sundays River. A café, overlooking the river, is available for light refreshments.
