CHART TOPPING EXPERIENCE: Great location, good food and excellent service at The Chartroom

The Friday that my friend and I visited The Chartroom at the Algoa Bay Yacht Club was on one of those rare but perfect winter days so we chose to sit on their outside deck. After receiving our drinks, we wasted little time and selected a deep-fried Camembert cheese with fig preserve and cranberry sauce for starters.

The Chartroom Restaurant, the deck and the members bar are on the first floor of the building and the clientele are a good mixture of salty sea dogs, businessmen and, being school holidays, families. The bar is well stocked and the wine list is extensive.  Awnings on the deck can be erected to provide protection from the wind, no matter from which direction it originates. The atmosphere and vibe are unique to the Eastern Cape and very enjoyable.

Moments later, our order arrived and immediately received the thumbs up for presentation and taste. The creamy Camembert cheese melted in my mouth and was perfectly complemented by two slices of crusty French loaf.

Soon afterwards, we were faced a predicament – it was hard to choose a single meal from the various tempting options on The Chatroom’s comprehensive menu. Unable to decide for ourselves, we roped in our waiter who suggested that we try one of their seafood combos and an Italian Popeye pizza.

I have to say that the service was excellent. Our waiter was efficient and the food arrived with the kind of promptness that you would expect from a good restaurant. The rectangular shaped pizza had a thin, crispy base and was smothered in an assortment of cheeses topped by bacon, avocado and spinach. Very tasty.

The seafood combo consisted of grilled calamari tubes and hake with garlic butter and tartar sauce, green beans, butternut and a green salad. Not only was the hake very fresh and grilled to perfection, but it was well-complemented by a very good tartar sauce. The tender calamari and fresh veggies added a burst of colour and taste.

The Chartroom Restaurant probably offers the best value for money of any restaurant in the Nelson Mandela Bay area. The food, service and view are all excellent and the food very inexpensive. No doubt, The Chartroom will be seeing me again soon…
