Chippa end winless streak and progress to Nedbank Cup semi-finals

Chippa United would feel more at ease after much sustained pressure building up to their Nedbank Cup quarter-final clash against Jomo Cosmos – which the Eastern Cape side won 1-0 at the NMB Stadium on Saturday.

Deadlocked 0-0 at half-time, the second 45 minutes was to be the foreground of achievement for the Chilli Boys in attempts to avoid extra time or shoot-outs; this after Ezenkosi beat Bidvest Wits in shootouts in the last-32 clash.

It was with approximately 20 minutes to go when a pin-point cross spearheaded Lerato Manzini to see the ball through for the headed goal.

The Chilli Boys then fell to a defensive retreat, as Jomo Cosmos beamed attacking streaks in the later stages, but goal-keeper, Zama Dlamini handily prevented any shots from netting through.

Head Coach Dan Malesela, admits that he underestimated their opponents and expected Jomo Cosmos to wear down as the match ticked on in the second half, but hailed his side as the deserving victors.

"We thought the Cosmos players would get tired; we thought we would stretch them a little bit more in the first half so we can use their tiring players to find gaps,” Malesela told SuperSport.

"But it wasn't to be – a very good game from them, also a bit of a scare right at the end with them having half chances,” Malesela added.

"Well done to our boys, I think we did well and I think we deserved the win."
