Chippa stalemates against grieving Maritzburg United

The embattled Chippa United had to endure their sixth consecutive winless encounter when they were held to a scoreless draw against an aggrieved Maritzburg United side at the NMB Stadium on Wednesday night.

In just under two weeks ago, Maritzburg midfielder Mondi Dlamini died in a car accident, and in failed attempts to get the match postponed, the side from KwaZulu-Natal were forced to take the field in the circumstances.

The match was dour affair, and no team left satisfied with the result, as both sides failed in execution.  Chippa keeper, Daniel Akpeyi made a fine save on the 42nd, while Mark Mayambela’s promised on attack in various stages of the first half.

Again in the 53rd minute, Mayambela’s free-kick ricocheted off the crossbar, just inching away for the ice-breaker.

Chippa debutant, Samuel Julies then also found the post in the 80th minute, as the match grew closer to a close. Neither side though, were able to capitalise, as the match stalemated to yet another draw.

The two struggling sides are only separated by one point on the overall ABSA Premiership table, with Maritzburg slotting up 9th spot and Chippa 10th place respectively.
