Coega breaks maximum temperature record that stood since 2012

Coega breaks maximum temperature record that stood since 2012

Tuesday was an interesting day for weather in Port Elizabeth and surrounding areas, according to the South African Weather Services Office.

"A 15 degree difference [was recorded] between the maximum temperature at Coega and Shark Rock Pier," describes, Garth Sampson, the SA Weather Services' Client Liaison Officer for the Eastern Cape.

"Incidentally, the 45 degree maximum at Coega was the highest on record, surpassing the 27 December 2012 record of 42.5 C, by a full 2.5 C. This was the only record that I could pick up for the Eastern Cape."

Samspson said that this is a perfect example of, amongst other things, the influence of topography/wind direction/proximity to sea/positioning in bay, under Berg Wind conditions.

"It is interesting that Coega and Shark Rock are only 19km apart," he explained.

"The longest distance between stations is Uitenhage and Shark Rock at 36 km. Besides Uitenhage, all other stations are roughly in a 10 km radius from each other."

Below is the graph of the different points in the Metro

NOTE: THE GRAPH DOES NOT GO UP TO 45C AS SAMPSON USED HOULY VALUES TO PLOT AND THE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OCCURRED AT JUST BEFORE 3pm (14h48) AT COEGA

SEASONAL RAINFALL

"There have been queries as to the comparison of 2016 figures and the 2016 summer season figures faired to the averages," said Sampson.

"In a nutshell, the year 2016 was between 10 and 30% below the norm. The SUMMER SEASON (Dec, Jan and Feb) were between 10 and 45% below the norm."
