Eastern Cape police say they will not be discouraged in their efforts to rid the province of crime following the shooting of two police officers in Mount Fletcher.

"SAPS members attached to Mount Fletcher Task Team, Crime Intelligence Gathering (CIG) and Katkop Detectives followed up on information about the location of an unlicensed firearm at Ngxaxha Locality near Mount Fletcher," said police.

"On arrival at the homestead, the members identified themselves and the suspect started shooting at the members. Cross fire ensued and two CIG members were shot."

Constables Qwanti and Lefora were both shot in the lower body and were rushed to hospital for medical attention.

"They are in a stable condition. The suspect was fatally wounded during the incident. IPID has been notified," police said.

"Cases of murder and attempted murder were opened and are currently under investigation."

The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga condemned the callous attack on the police officers.

“I wish Constables Qwanti and Lefora a speedy recovery and all the strength they need during their recuperation in hospital. It can never be right to gun down a man or woman in blue or any other person. We will however, not be deterred in our determination to fight crime,” concluded Lt Gen Ntshinga.
