Counterfeit goods worth R1.8 million seized in East London during raid

East London Port of Entry members followed up on information about a workshop that was allegedly manufacturing counterfeit items and seized various goods worth over a million Rands on Monday.

"After they concluded the workshop a joint operation was conducted at the China Town. Adams and Adams attorneys, Customs and Colgate joined the operation," said police spokesperson, W/O Hazel Mqala.

"Lots of boxes of counterfeit goods were confiscated to the estimated value of R1.8 million.

"Fines were issued per item to the amount of R5 000 or 5 years imprisonment for the first offender."

She said that means for the second offender, the charge will be R10 000 and failing to pay will be nine years imprisonment.

The acting POE commander, W/O Jacobs, commended the members on the work they have done.
