COVID-19: Social Development Dept provides counsellors, support services

Bhisho - As the country and the Eastern Cape Province, in particular, is battling COVID-19, government has had to constantly devise means of dealing with the pandemic.

"COVID-19 is not just a health issue as it has changed life as we know it," said the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development.

"The Department has since established professional counselling and psycho-social support services team and community development service teams made up of social workers and community development practitioners.

"Over 200 social workers have been trained to render psycho-social support through telephonic interviews to people infected and affected by COVID-19 pandemic."

It sid that community development practitioners will be working closely with shelters to assess and profile each beneficiary to determine capabilities, skills and possible linkage with available opportunities for future interventions beyond COVID-19 lockdown.

"Community Development Practitioners are also responsible for education and raising awareness on COVID-19 in shelters and communities in partnership with other stakeholders particularly Institutions of Higher Learning," the Dept added.

"In response to the rising number of Gender-Based Violence during lockdown the Department has appointed 30 social workers."
