Cradock police seize dagga worth over R400 000 after fleeing driver crashes

Cradock - Cradock police seized a huge consignment of dagga that was being transported through the town in a film-style incident that occurred over the weekend.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Lariane Jonker, on Saturday, at about 23:30, members from the Cradock Highway Patrol and the Operational Command Centre were patrolling the R61 Cradock/Tarkastad road, when they noticed a suspicious-looking Corsa bakkie with tinted windows, passing them in the direction towards Cradock.

"On further investigation, the vehicle sped off in the direction towards Cradock," she said.

"At roughly eight kilometres outside of Cradock, the suspect lost control of the vehicle, where after the vehicle left the road, collided with a pole and came to a stand still in a ditch.

"The suspect then jumped over the adjacent fence and dissapeared into the bushes."

Capt Jonker said that the vehicle was searched and 406.9 kg of marijuana was found in the back, as well as on the inside passenger side of the vehicle.

"The estimated street value of the marijuana is estimated at R406 900. The vehicle and marijuana was confiscated," she added.

"A case of dealing in marijuana is being investigated by the Cradock SAPS."
