Mthatha - The Department of Water and Sanitation has opened a water resource pollution criminal case at the East London police station, against Anix Truck Hire after their truck was recorded discharging sewage into the Mthatha Dam.

"A video and photos of a truck discharging into the dam appeared on social media last week; and subsequently the incident was reported to the department’s offices in Mthatha," said Sputnik Ratau, Spokesperson for the Department of Water and Sanitation.

"Environmental Officers of the Mthatha Office visited the Mthatha Dam on Friday last week.

"They found discharge on site."

He said thatt the Department has now taken samples of water for microbiological and chemical analysis in three areas of the dam.

"It is hoped that the results of the tests will assist with police investigation."

Portia Makhanya, the Eastern Cape Provincial Head, added that the department takes zero tolerance against any form of pollution of water resources.

“We want to enforce and ensure compliance by all water users, be it businesses, local government or individuals. As the department, we are regulators and we will play this role to the best of our ability,” she said.
