DA blames ANC for the torching of the historic Sterkstroom School

School children in the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality are now bearing the brunt of the failing African National Congress' (ANC) corruption and inability to deliver basic services, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape.

"Today, at about 01:00, the historic Sterkstroom School was totally destroyed after it was ravaged by a fire," said Nqaba Bhanga, DA Eastern Cape Premier Candidate.

"Although arson is being investigated, the school could have been saved if the and the Chris Hani District Municipality were able to deliver the most basic of services.

"This was the third fire in Sterkstroom in the last five weeks."

He said that he was informed by the DA Councillor, Lindy Haggard, that the only available fire truck arrived in Sterkstroom to find that the hydrants were dry.

"Chris Hani District Municipality eventually turned on the water to the hydrants, but the water pressure was too weak to assist in dousing the flames.

"She also explained Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality has a big fire truck which was repaired, but it has been standing idle for over two months. The truck can only be released after the municipality makes a payment of R29 000," Bhanga said.

"Fire fighters are also not equipped with the protective gear essential for doing their jobs.

"This situation renders the fire department helpless.

"The failing ANC has turned this municipality into a monument of corruption and maladministration."

By the end of September 2018, the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality had outstanding bills of R223 million to pay.

"This amount includes R118 million owed to Eskom.

"Water and electricity outages happen regularly and almost no repairs or maintenance of failing infrastructure takes place," he added.

"I have asked my colleague in the Eastern Cape Legislature, Vicky Knoetze MPL, Shadow MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), to bring the situation under the attention of Fikile Xasa, MEC for COGTA.

"MEC Xasa must urgently intervene to ensure that our children and residents don’t continue to suffer because of the failing ANC’s inability to govern."
