DA calls on Bhisho to embrace fourth industrial revolution to address unemployment

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Provincial Legislature this week moved a motion calling on the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) and MEC Lubablo Mabuyane to deal decisively with the deteriorating state of our provincial economy by embracing the forward looking agenda of the fourth industrial revolution.

"Unemployment in the Eastern Cape is at catastrophic levels and remains the highest of all provinces at 45.8%.

"On a recent oversight visit to Dimbaza, outside King Williams Town, the devastating impact of unemployment was tangible," described Andrew Whitfield (MPL), DA Eastern Cape Shadow MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs & Tourism.

"A once vibrant and productive industrial manufacturing hub has become an economic graveyard exposing the provincial government's neglect of the poor."

According to the latest quarterly labour survey 730,000 people are unemployed in the Eastern Cape and an additional 412,000 have given up looking for work.

"Those who have given up hope of finding employment have given up hope in the ANC government.

"In order to compete in the global market place, the DA believes that small businesses can be a catalyst for economic growth and job creation across all sectors driven by a commitment to the fourth industrial revolution," Whitfield added.

"By cutting red tape, reducing the cost of starting and running a business and providing meaningful incentives we can turn the tide on unemployment in the Eastern Cape."
